Band scores are approximate estimates based on publicly available conversion tables. Actual scores may vary depending on test version and calibration. Writing and Speaking scores are examiner-assessed and cannot be predicted from raw marks.
How IELTS Scores Are Calculated
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures English proficiency across four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Each section receives a band score from 1.0 to 9.0 in half-band increments. Your overall band score is the arithmetic mean of all four section scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
Listening and Reading are objectively scored based on the number of correct answers out of 40 questions each. These raw scores are converted to band scores using conversion tables that differ slightly between test versions. The Academic and General Training tests use the same Listening test but different Reading tests, with separate conversion scales for Reading. Writing and Speaking are assessed by trained examiners using detailed band descriptors covering criteria such as task achievement, coherence, lexical resource, and grammatical range. Each criterion is scored individually, and the section band is calculated from those sub-scores.
The rounding convention is important: if your average is X.25, it rounds up to X.5; if it is X.75, it rounds up to X+1. For example, section scores of 7.0, 6.5, 7.0, and 6.5 average to 6.75, which rounds to 7.0 overall.

FAQ
What is the difference between Academic and General Training?
Both versions share the same Listening and Speaking tests. The difference is in the Reading and Writing sections. Academic IELTS is designed for university admissions and features academic texts and essay-style writing tasks. General Training is used for immigration, work experience, and non-academic training, with texts drawn from everyday contexts. The Reading conversion table is more lenient for General Training because the texts are considered slightly easier.
How is the overall band score rounded?
The overall band is the average of four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5. If the average ends in .25, it rounds up to .5. If it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole number. For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, and 6.75 becomes 7.0.
Can I retake individual IELTS sections?
Yes. IELTS One Skill Retake allows you to retake a single section (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) if you were close to your target score. This option is available within 60 days of your original test at participating centres.
How long are IELTS scores valid?
IELTS scores are generally valid for two years from the test date. Some institutions and immigration authorities may accept older results or require more recent ones — always check specific requirements.
