How to Study Vocabulary Effectively

Building a strong vocabulary is one of the most impactful things you can do for academic success. The best approach is active recall — testing yourself repeatedly rather than simply reading word lists. Start by learning words in context: read a sentence or passage that uses the word, then try to define it from memory. Flashcards work well, but only if you shuffle them and space your reviews over days and weeks rather than cramming in one session.

Group words by theme or root. Many English words share Latin or Greek roots, so learning one root can unlock the meaning of dozens of related words. For example, knowing that "bene" means "good" helps you decode benevolent, beneficial, and benediction. Write your own sentences using new words — the act of producing language strengthens memory far more than passive recognition. Finally, track your progress. Keep a vocabulary journal and revisit words you got wrong. Aim to learn 5–10 new words per day consistently rather than 50 words the night before a test.

SAT Vocabulary Tips

The Digital SAT no longer tests obscure vocabulary in isolation, but strong vocabulary still matters for Reading & Writing questions. Focus on words that appear frequently in academic and professional contexts — words like "pragmatic," "ambiguous," and "empirical." Pay attention to words with multiple meanings; the SAT often tests secondary definitions. Practice with vocabulary-in-context questions where you must determine a word's meaning from surrounding sentences.

Use practice tests to identify which words trip you up, then add those to your study list. Read widely — articles from publications like The Atlantic, Scientific American, and The Economist expose you to SAT-level vocabulary naturally. Pair your vocabulary study with reading comprehension practice for the best results.
