How to Run a Spelling Test
Spelling tests are one of the most effective ways to build vocabulary and reinforce correct word usage. To run a spelling test, start by selecting words appropriate for your student's level. Read each word clearly, use it in a sentence for context, then have the student write the spelling from memory. After the test, review any missed words together and discuss common patterns or rules that apply.
For best results, introduce new words at the beginning of the week and practice them daily before testing on Friday. Limit lists to 10-20 words so students can focus on mastery rather than memorization overload. Encourage students to look for word families, prefixes, and suffixes that can help them remember tricky spellings. Research shows that students retain spelling better when they write words by hand, say them aloud, and use them in sentences throughout the week.
This tool makes it easy to practice at home. Enter your word list or choose a grade-level set, then let the audio pronounce each word while your student types the spelling. The instant feedback helps identify problem areas, and you can retry missed words until they stick.
Spelling Words by Grade Level
Spelling difficulty progresses naturally through grade levels. In 1st and 2nd grade, students learn high-frequency sight words and common phonetic patterns. By 3rd and 4th grade, words become longer and include silent letters, double consonants, and irregular spellings. In upper grades (5th-8th), students encounter academic vocabulary, Latin and Greek roots, and words with complex spelling patterns like "bureaucracy" and "accommodate." Our grade-level lists reflect these progressions and align with common core standards.
